Biden’s Trip to Israel Carries Risks for U.S. Policy & His Own Legacy

10/17/23

The following report is given with information gathered on October 17th at 2:00pm Pacific Time. Stay updated each day with Pray News each day as the story evolves and changes.

President Joe Biden's recent and hastily organized trip to Israel and Jordan—scheduled amidst a spiraling humanitarian crisis in Gaza and looming Israeli ground invasion—has brought the multifaceted complexities of American foreign policy into sharp focus. The visit raised both diplomatic and political and security risks that extend far beyond the boundaries of the embattled region, posing a crucial test of leadership for President Biden, especially considering his promises to end the "forever wars."

The Crucial Backdrop
A catastrophic explosion at a hospital in Gaza, which saw hundreds killed, escalated tensions hours before President Biden was to depart from Washington. The Israeli military and Hamas pointed fingers at each other for the calamity, resulting in Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas canceling his planned meeting with Biden.

This sequence of events cast doubt on the utility and outcome of the visit. On the flip side, the trip aimed to send a stern warning to third parties, such as Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah, discouraging them from joining the conflict, thus placing U.S. credibility on the line.

The abrupt nature of Biden’s scheduled visit calls to question whether Secretary of State Anthony Blinken was able to carry the diplomatic load on his own. He began his visit with an impassioned speech, declaring that he, himself, was a Jew and stood in solidarity with Israel. We can all empathize with such a declaration. However, upon further examination, this statement from Blinken was a red flag to Egypt, Jordan, Iran, and other non-Jewish countries that American diplomacy might be solely in favor of Israel. Whether that’s true or not, foreign diplomacy relies on some semblance of neutrality. Blinken was stood up by several leaders in the past two days in the wake of his statements. So, it looks like they’re calling in Biden.

A Political Tightrope
Interestingly, the trip serves a dual purpose for President Biden. On one hand, it solidifies his commitment to Israel's security and attempts to alleviate the humanitarian situation in Gaza. On the other, it offers a moment for him to internally question Israel about its long-term strategic goals, especially after any potential ground operation concludes. Israel has sent mixed messages on its long-term goals, and many people are getting flashbacks to America’s response to the 9/11 attacks, which were immediate but lacked a long-term goal and vision.

Biden walks a delicate line within his own party as well. While support for Israel remains popular among the general American populace, the Democratic Party's attitude has seen a shift towards the Palestinian cause over the past two decades. Progressive Democrats have openly called for a cease-fire and immediate humanitarian aid to Gaza, signaling an internal rift that Biden cannot afford to ignore.

Military Posture
The U.S. military presence in the region adds another layer to the equation. Two significant naval forces have been deployed near Israel to deter Hezbollah and others from participating in the conflict. Roughly 2,000 U.S. troops are also on standby, even though Biden and his administration assert that U.S. combat troops will not be sent into another war.

The presence of the U.S. military acts as a warning to Iran as well. However, once again, each move comes at a cost. America’s strong posturing in solidarity with Israel may hamstring meetings with Egypt, Iran and Jordan. Biden must be precise with every meeting, choosing his words incredibly carefully. This is something that, in general, the American public does not trust him to do, especially after his interview with 60-minutes, which showcased painfully slow and fumbled answers from the President to even the most basic of questions. A lot hangs in the balance, so we will pray eagerly for Biden to be sharp, balanced, and calculated in the next few days.

No matter where you fall on the political spectrum or what your support of the current administration looks like, this is a time where everyone unifies in wanting the President to do well. Too much hangs in the balance to cheer for Biden’s failure.

The Humanitarian Crisis
Secretary of State Antony Blinken has underscored the urgency of getting aid into Gaza, where the situation has grown dire. The U.S. has also expressed concerns about American citizens possibly trapped in Gaza, further complicating the delicate diplomatic ballet that is underway. Egypt has gone back and forth on its willingness to open up borders for people to leave Gaza. Blinken’s inability to negotiate the release of U.S. citizens out of Gaza casts a shadow on his tenure as SOS.

Biden’s Legacy on the Line
President Biden is walking a very thin line with this visit to Israel. Not only does he risk his own political capital and the United States’ diplomatic relations in the Middle East, but he also risks a key element of his legacy.

Biden’s pledge to end “forever wars” is in the spotlight now, and his ability to navigate this complex situation could either reinforce his commitment to peace or reveal an underlying inconsistency in his policy decisions. Given that he is also grappling with internal party divisions and a deeply intricate humanitarian crisis, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

The next few days could be defining moments for Biden’s presidency. The question now is not just about how well he can balance the expectations of varied constituencies but how his choices will be viewed in the annals of history. Will he emerge as a peacemaker, or as a leader whose actions incited further conflict? Only time will tell.

For now, we will pray and watch…

Clashes Intensify as Israel Prepares Gaza Invasions

10/15/23

The intensifying conflict between Israel and Hamas is reaching an unprecedented scale. The latest escalations come as Israeli forces prepare for a ground invasion of Gaza while also countering challenges on its northern border with Lebanon involving Hezbollah militants.

The Dual Front
On Sunday, Israel's military struck multiple targets in Gaza, signaling a potential ground assault. Concurrently, the nation’s northern border became a hotspot, as Israeli jets counterattacked Lebanon-based militants, including Hezbollah. According to Israeli authorities, these counterattacks were prompted by at least six strikes against Israeli territory, injuring five in the town of Shtula.

This double-edged conflict has international implications. President Joe Biden weighed in, stating, "Israel is going after a group of people who have engaged in barbarism that is as consequential as the Holocaust." Biden did not confirm yet whether he would visit Israel but stated that the U.S. is concerned about Hezbollah's activities and is in dialogue with Iran, which backs the militant group. The rising temperature of this conflict will test the fortitude of our president and other world leaders as they seek to de-escalate it.

A Troubling Death Toll
The immediate cause for Israel’s heightened military activities was an attack by Hamas militants last week, which reportedly led to the deaths of 1,400 Israelis—described as the worst single-day death toll for Jews since the Holocaust. In response, an Israeli airstrike killed Billal Al Kedra, a Hamas commander responsible for a massacre at Kibbutz Nirim. On the flip side, the Gazan Health Ministry reported a death toll of 2,450 Palestinians, surpassing fatalities from the 2014 war between the two sides.

A Diplomatic Scramble
Amidst the turmoil, efforts for a diplomatic resolution are underway. Egyptian officials have been coordinating with the U.S. to allow American citizens to leave Gaza via the Rafah crossing in exchange for humanitarian aid. This move is particularly significant given Gaza's growing shortages of essentials like water and fuel. Moreover, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi has called for an international summit to discuss the future of the Palestinian issue, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is also involved in diplomatic efforts, having recently met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Egyptian President Sisi. The focus seems to be on preventing Hamas' attacks on Israel and ensuring the conflict doesn’t broaden further.

A Humanitarian Crisis in the Making
The United Nations has raised alarm bells about a humanitarian crisis, highlighting shortages of drinking water and fuel for hospitals in Gaza. The mass casualties have burdened health facilities to the extent that ice-cream trucks are being used as mobile morgues in Gaza, according to reports.

Israel issued a 24-hour evacuation notice, prompting an exodus of nearly 1 million people. The evacuation process has been fraught with difficulties, as evidenced by a deadly incident involving a convoy in which nearly 70 people were killed. While details about the incident are still debated, it shines a spotlight on the extreme difficulties faced by civilians in the region.

Gaza, which has long been under a blockade, faces shortages of basic necessities such as food, water, and electricity. The main hospital in the region is within the evacuation zone, with reports stating that the system is overwhelmed and running solely on generators.

As Israel urges Palestinian civilians to move south, Hamas is telling people to stay put, creating a conundrum for the ordinary citizens.

Geopolitical Ripples
The United States has increased its military presence in the region, signaling its concern over the unfolding events. Meanwhile, Iran has sent a complex message, expressing its wish to avoid further escalation but warning that it will get involved if Israeli military operations in Gaza continue. The Iranian foreign minister has met with Hezbollah leader Nasrallah, leading to speculation about the potential involvement of other parties in the conflict.

The Role of External Players
Iran, an ally of Hezbollah, has warned about the risks of a regional conflict, suggesting that the United States could also be dragged into the escalation. Hezbollah has also been shooting at security cameras along the Israeli border, ratcheting up tension.

Interestingly, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas criticized Hamas's actions in a call with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. He stated that the militant group’s actions didn’t represent the Palestinian people and called for the opening of humanitarian corridors.

Reflection:
As both sides suffer enormous human losses, the complexity and scale of this conflict, along with its global ramifications, are clear. Diplomatic channels are buzzing, and foreign diplomats are working against the clock to find a peaceful solution. Amidst the grim statistics and escalating military action, the voice of moderation and humanitarian concern must not be lost.

Whether attacks and retaliation are justified or not, innocents are always caught in the crossfires of war. The elderly woman held captive without her medication. The men beheaded in the streets for defending their families. The children lost in horrific fashion. The hospitals overrun and without water or electricity. These are the horrific casualties of war. Some may pray for “winners” and “losers,” but we know that there are no true winners in a conflict like this. In the midst of the horror and humanitarian crisis, we cling to the words spoken in Revelation 22 like a sailor to the mast of his sinking ship. “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!”

Israel Forms Unity Government, Anthony Blinken Arrives, & Harvard Controversy

10/12/23

With the situation in the Middle East escalating rapidly, Israel has undertaken a military campaign to dismantle Hamas, the group designated a terrorist organization by the U.S., Israel, and others. This occurs as Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrives in Israel for talks geared towards averting a wider regional conflict.

Striking Aims: The Israeli Objective
On Thursday, Israel’s military issued its clearest statement on its aims: to capture or kill all leaders of Hamas, neutralize its militant units, and inhibit the group's ability to govern Gaza. "We plan to get to every one of these people—every single one of them,” said Israeli military spokesman Richard Hecht. Overnight airstrikes targeted a Hamas unit purportedly responsible for recent attacks killing 1,300 Israelis. The military strategy involves rooting out weapons caches, launchpads, and key personnel, made easier through interrogating captured militants.

A Domino Effect: Regional Repercussions
The burgeoning conflict risks igniting a wider crisis. Israel has summoned about 300,000 reserve troops, positioning them near the Gaza border. This move comes as Israeli forces have also exchanged fire with Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militant group along Israel’s northern border with Lebanon. If Hezbollah joins the war fully, the repercussions for both Israel and Lebanon could be devastating.

During his visit, Blinken is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, and cabinet members. He will proceed to Jordan for additional meetings aimed at dissuading other states and militant groups from joining the conflict.

International Intricacies: Saudi and Iranian Involvement
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi have discussed the conflict. This marks a significant move, considering the recent dĂŠtente between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The Saudi Press Agency reported that Riyadh is exerting "maximum effort" to prevent further escalation. As for Iran, U.S. officials stress the importance of Tehran not taking adverse actions during the current crisis.

Humanitarian Crisis: Gaza Under Siege
Israel’s offensive has led to the death of more than 1,300 Palestinians, according to Gaza officials. The region, already impoverished, now faces a dire humanitarian situation with supplies of food, water, and fuel dwindling, as Israel has laid a total siege on the enclave.

Changing Winds: Israel’s Political Arena
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formed a national unity government involving members of the opposition and former military leaders. This development comes in the wake of criticisms against Netanyahu and aims to establish some unity after a period of societal and political polarization in Israel.

"The most important action [now] is to establish the unity of the nation,” Netanyahu said during a televised speech. Along with Benny Gantz, head of the National Unity party, Netanyahu aims to bolster both public and military confidence in the leadership’s wartime decisions.

The newly-formed war cabinet also includes Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and two observers: former chief of staff Eizenkot and Ron Dermer, a trusted ally of Netanyahu. Yair Lapid, the head of the opposition, is also invited to join, an inclusion that could boost Israel’s foreign diplomacy.

Harvard Controversy
In the wake of all this, a recent pro-Palestinian letter penned by a coalition of 34 student organizations at Harvard University has ignited a heated debate among its prominent alumni, leading some to call for the university's intervention against the signatories. The student letter from Harvard laid the blame for the conflict squarely on Israel, citing decades of occupation and describing Israel as an "apartheid regime."

The organizations endorsing the letter range from Muslim and Palestinian support groups to other groups like Harvard Jews for Liberation and the African American Resistance Organization.

The uproar from the alumni community was swift. Lawrence Summers, former U.S. Treasury Secretary and Harvard President Emeritus, criticized the current university leadership for its silence, stating it made the institution appear "neutral towards acts of terror against the Jewish state of Israel." Republican U.S. Representative Elise Stefanik and Senator Ted Cruz, both Harvard graduates, also expressed their strong disapproval, calling the student letter "abhorrent and heinous."

Harvard President Claudine Gay and senior leadership, including 15 deans, issued a statement expressing their heartbreak over the "death and destruction unleashed by the attack by Hamas that targeted citizens in Israel this weekend." However, the statement conspicuously avoided mentioning the contentious student letter or the reaction it generated. Some have viewed this as a missed opportunity for the university to take a definitive stance on a polarizing issue, particularly given Harvard's influence in U.S. politics; the university has produced eight former U.S. Presidents and currently boasts four Supreme Court Justices among its alumni.

This instance at Harvard is a microcosm for America’s diverse views on the Israel-Palestine issue, which has seen increasing division along partisan lines for years now. It’s understandable that there are diverse views on the historical treatment of Palestinians in Gaza. The situation is rife with controversy, and there’s no doubt that the historical tension is the fault of both sides. What seems distasteful, however, is making Israel solely responsible for the slaughter of children and kidnapping of elderly to use as hostage human shields. The views lack nuance, reflection, and an ability to assign balanced responsibility towards decision-makers in Hamas who committed those acts.

The storm stirred by the pro-Palestinian letter from Harvard students and the consequential alumni outrage highlight the intricate and emotional complexities surrounding the Israel-Palestine issue. It also puts the spotlight on the responsibilities of academic institutions in navigating the precarious balance between academic freedom and the sensitivities of their broader communities. Whether Harvard will take any action in response to its alumni's concerns remains to be seen. For now, the university remains at the center of a fervent debate that shows no signs of abating, a situation that reflects the larger, ongoing struggles in the Middle East and the world's grappling with how to address them.

Reflection
The situation in the Middle East is complex and volatile, with a delicate balance of regional and international forces at play. Blinken’s mission, aimed at preventing a more widespread conflict, comes at a critical time. Simultaneously, Israel's shift toward a unity government underlines the seriousness of the situation and the deep impacts it has domestically. The situation at Harvard highlights the diverse views even within America’s most esteemed institutions.

While the world heats up with hate, we will pray for a peace that surpasses all understanding. The sad reality is that as war intensifies, the opportunity for division within previously-united groups increases. No doubt, as you darken the halls of your workplaces, step into our churches, or sit down for Holiday meals, you will speak to people with different views than you. Let’s pray that everything we say will be tempered with love but never sacrifice on conviction.

Israel Bombards Gaza:
Fears of Humanitarian Disaster Mount

10/11/23

In a rapidly escalating conflict that has enveloped Israel and the Gaza Strip, concerns are mounting over an impending humanitarian disaster. This report delves into the complex and tragic situation, aiming to offer a balanced, informative, and empathetic analysis of the unfolding crisis.

A Cycle of Violence
On Saturday, a devastating attack by Hamas resulted in the death of more than 1,200 Israelis, primarily civilians. Hideous footage and testimonies are pouring in, showcasing the spite, hatred, and evil-nature of this attack. Israel's response has been a series of airstrikes in Gaza and skirmishes along its northern border with Lebanon. The scale of this military action has elicited fears of a humanitarian disaster. According to the enclave's Health Ministry, Israeli strikes have so far killed at least 950 Palestinians in Gaza.

Dire Circumstances in Gaza
More than a quarter-million Gazans have fled their homes, trying to escape the ongoing bombardment. Israel’s military has imposed a complete siege on Gaza, leading to critical shortages of food, water, and fuel. Gaza’s main powerplant has also gone dark, leading to desperation. Of those who have been displaced, more than half are taking refuge in U.N.-run schools. The remaining seek shelter in hotels and other areas less likely to be targeted.

Despite the Israeli military's encouragement for Palestinians to leave via a border crossing with Egypt, the crossing itself has been bombed three times, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. This has effectively sealed off any escape route for the residents, meaning the warning for Palestinians to evacuate was more a claim of the inevitable than a call to evacuate.

Ripple Effects: The Regional Crisis
Israel’s response is not limited to Gaza. The Israeli military has also exchanged fire with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Should Hezbollah fully join the war, military analysts suggest it could spell disaster for both Lebanon and Israel. This could potentially morph the conflict into a broader regional crisis, bringing in foreign allies like the US.

Egypt's Reluctance to Intervene
Despite growing pressure, Egypt has shown no willingness to open its border with Gaza to allow refugees to flee. The situation in Gaza is further complicated by Egypt’s tightened restrictions on the enclave and its own North Sinai region.

Attacks on Civilians & Hostages
Evidence emerging from Israeli sites near Gaza indicates that Hamas gunmen attacked Israeli civilians in all the mundane places of a Saturday morning, killing more than 1,000 people and abducting an estimated 150 more. Most notably, more footage is coming out of a massacre at an Israeli music-festival, with civilians being shot down, captured, and sexually asaulted as they desperately tried to flee. Israeli soldiers, retaking control of towns near Gaza, have found evidence of the massacre of civilians by Hamas gunmen.

According to available reports, an array of individuals, from young children to elderly citizens, have been abducted. Among the most unsettling visuals to emerge are videos featuring hostages like Shiri Bibas, a young mother seen with her two children, and Yaffa Adar, an 85-year-old woman who requires chronic medication. This stark reality forces us to confront the unimaginable suffering inflicted upon civilians caught in the crossfire of geopolitical struggles.

With threats of public executions for every Israeli airstrike on Gazan homes, this hostage situation signifies an alarming escalation, one that even has global organizations unequivocally labeling Hamas as a terrorist entity.

Israel has a unique historical approach to such crises, often putting its citizens' lives above other considerations. We've seen audacious rescue operations like the 1976 raid in Entebbe, Uganda, and complex negotiations, such as the trade of more than a 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for the release of a single Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit, in 2011. Given the scale of the current situation, however, the prospect of a wholesale prisoner exchange seems increasingly unlikely.

This crisis comes as global opinions continue to shift. While left-leaning factions in the U.S. and Europe have been growing more sympathetic towards the Palestinian cause, the sheer brutality of these recent events has put Palestinian supporters on the defensive. President Biden’s scathing condemnation of the acts as a “violation of every code of human morality” underlines the gravity of the situation.

The complexities of this issue also extend to Israel’s tactical considerations. Intelligence suggests that the hostages are being held in small, dispersed groups, likely in tunnels beneath Gaza. This makes a large-scale rescue operation exceedingly difficult, if not impossible. Any further escalation in violence threatens not only Israeli lives but also citizens of other countries, including the U.S. and Thailand, who are among the hostages.

A Human Perspective
Residents, children, and families on both sides are bearing the brunt of this violence. The hostages taken by Hamas are women, children, and elderly. We will be offering prayers up to them in this time. From the perspective of some Palastinians trying to flee Gaza, Ahmad Hassouna, a 42-year-old man from Gaza City’s al-Karama neighborhood, summarized the desperation, saying, “Forget human rights, we don’t even have animal rights.”

Military Capacity and Civilian Casualties
The Israeli military has stated that it has a reduced capacity for precision strikes because its forces are stretched thin. This limitation has severe implications for civilians, as evidenced by several residential buildings in heavily populated areas being targeted, resulting in casualties, including among the elderly, women, and children.

Reflection
The tragedy unfolding affects innocent lives on both sides and calls for urgent prayers for peace, reconciliation, and an end to suffering. The Bible also teaches us the value of all human lives, as each person is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). We must, therefore, mourn for every life lost, irrespective of borders, and pray for wisdom for leaders to find a way to bring about a ceasefire and humanitarian relief.

There are two other calls we have been given in scripture - two calls that must be held in tension with each other.

The first call is to justice. Psalm 82 tells us to “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute,” and those words certainly apply to the innocent lives caught in the crossfires of this conflict. God also declares that justice and vengeance are His (Dueteronomy 32 & Romans 12), and we ought look to Him as He raises up ministers of justice to thwart campaigns of evil.

The second call is to pray for our enemies. Jesus empores us in Matthew 5:43-45, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor’ and ‘Hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.…” In a complex geopolitical world, this scripture seems out of place and nearly impossible. But we have to assume that when Jesus said, “Love your enemies,” He meant all your enemies. How love prevails in this dark situation, we aren’t sure. But we will pray that Christ’s justice and love shine through somehow.

Amidst the destruction, the Christian community has a role in offering spiritual solace, pushing for diplomatic dialogue, and providing humanitarian aid. It's a call for Christians worldwide to uphold the principles of justice, mercy, and humility as we navigate through these devastating times.

Updates From Israel:
All-Out War

10/10/23

The world watches as Israel gears up for a ground war in Gaza. The situation has captivated international attention, weighing heavy on the hearts of people around the globe. The prospect of a new, devastating conflict in one of the most historically volatile regions poses challenges not only for those directly involved but also for the international community.

The U.S. Standpoint
President Biden has publicly condemned Hamas's attack on Israel, describing it as "an act of sheer evil" that resulted in the death of more than 1,000 civilians, including at least 14 U.S. citizens. The U.S. administration is further complicating its global posture, struggling to balance its commitment to Israel, its closest ally in the Middle East, with its desire not to be drawn into another regional conflict. This situation has deflected the administration's focus from other international issues such as the war in Ukraine and rising tensions with China.

The Ground Reality
Israeli airstrikes have significantly affected parts of Gaza, killing hundreds and forcing people to flee their homes. The Israeli government argues that the actions are a response to Hamas's unprecedented assault that killed more than 1,000 civilians and took hostages, including U.S. citizens. Meanwhile, Hamas's mass killing of Israelis has international bodies and governments urging for peace, albeit acknowledging Israel's right to defend itself.

Hamas announced that it had abducted several hundred individuals, with intentions to use them as leverage against Israeli military operations in Gaza. Hamas gave notice that for every missile strike against Gaza, there would be public executions of the hostages.

The Humanitarian Aspect
Regardless of the political and military dynamics, the suffering of everyday people cannot be overlooked. The Palestinian enclave’s health ministry has reported 900 deaths due to the ongoing Israeli strikes. Simultaneously, Israel is contending with its casualties and hostages taken by Hamas. Both sides have been accused of war crimes, and are receiving ire from the international community. Calls for a ceasefire or at least, humanitarian pauses, have been loud but so far unheeded.

Broader Implications
The risks of a regional conflict are on the rise, particularly involving Lebanon's Hezbollah or even Iran. Should Israel move forward with its ground invasion, there's the potential for a long, drawn-out conflict that would inevitably involve other players and possibly even the United States. This is a critical point, particularly as the world is still grappling with other conflicts worldwide.

World leaders from the U.S., France, Germany, Italy, and the U.K. have expressed strong backing for Israel. But there is a stark absence of unanimous international consensus on how to deescalate the situation. Countries like Egypt and Turkey are working behind the scenes to mediate, but with little success so far.

Israel's Changed Stance
For years, Israel has retaliated against Hamas's attacks but stopped short of seeking the group's complete eradication. However, this time around, the Israeli military seems intent on a more aggressive stance. With a mobilization of more than 300,000 reservists, Israel appears prepared for a long and possibly more devastating conflict than ever before.

The Fog of War
New information is pouring in each day about how this conflict began, how long it took for Hamas to plan, and the failure of the Israeli government to predict the attack. Sources from the Wall Street Journal and Breaking Points pointed out that warnings about this attack were whispered from Egyptian intelligence, but there was no follow-through. This intensifies criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose heavy-handed regime has been justified because it promised safety and security from Palestinian terrorism and outside threats.

To add to the confusion, there has been an increasing amount of misinformation spreading across social media platforms. False videos and narratives are rampant, making it difficult for people to discern the truth.

Other Players
Cryptocurrencies have partly underwritten the conflict. Wallets associated with Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas have received millions in crypto funds, making it easier to finance operations. Although Iran has not openly claimed to direct Hamas's actions, it allegedly gave the green light for the attack. Hamas claims Iran helped with the planning, further raising the temperature for the U.S.. Hezbollah, another militant group backed by Iran, has so far been restricted to exchanges of fire with the Israeli military. The U.S. has warned both Iran and Hezbollah against joining the fighting.

Faith, Ethics, and the Future
From a Christian perspective, the current situation challenges us to ponder the complexities of justice, the sanctity of life, and the importance of peace. It serves as a reminder for the global Christian community to remain fervent in prayer for wisdom for world leaders, protection for civilians, and a peaceful resolution to a deeply rooted conflict.

As Israel readies for a possible ground invasion of Gaza, the stakes are incredibly high. This pending action comes with its set of ethical, humanitarian, and geopolitical implications that will have a profound impact on an already fragile Middle East. As people of faith and conscience, the onus is upon us all to seek wisdom and understanding in these tumultuous times.

War, in any form, is a heartbreaking outcome of human sinfulness and a broken world. The New Testament speaks to Christians about being peacemakers (Matthew 5:9), and the importance of seeking peace is a biblical principle that stems from the nature of God Himself, who is the author of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33).

The situation in Israel and Gaza is complex and multi-faceted, as are most conflicts. While God’s love for Israel is evident in the Bible, His desire for peace and justice extends to all nations and peoples (Isaiah 56:7, Acts 10:34-35).

Let us pray for peace, not just for Israel but for Gaza and all involved in this devastating situation. Let us pray for wisdom for the leaders and comfort for those who mourn. May we never forget that every life lost is precious in the sight of God.

Updates From Israel:
All-Out War

10/9/23

In recent days, an alarming escalation has unfolded in the Israel-Gaza conflict, intensifying concerns for the already tumultuous Middle East. The Israeli military has launched a wave of attacks on Gaza in response to what has been described as the most devastating attack on a nation since WWII. As the world watches, both in horror and concern, there is an underlying need to explore this issue from a balanced perspective that captures the complexity and depth of the ongoing crisis.

Context of Invasion
Over the weekend, Israel was subjected to an unprecedented attack from Gaza, sending thousands of missiles into Israel, with Hamas fighters breaching Israeli military bases and taking hundreds of hostages back to Gaza. This event shocked Israel and drew comparisons to significant security failures like the September 11 attacks in the United States. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet issued a formal declaration of war, subsequently calling up 300,000 reservists, the largest in Israeli history.

Israel's Response
In response to the invasion, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have gone on the offensive. Tanks, troops, and attack aircraft have been mobilized, with a focus on regaining control of towns in the country's south. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has ordered a full siege of Gaza, cutting off all essential supplies. Although Israel has targeted what it claims to be militant sites, the airstrikes have wreaked havoc on residential towers, civilian facilities, and even mosques, according to Hamas spokespeople.

International Involvement
As the crisis unfolds, the United States has expressed its full support for Israel, not only politically but also in terms of military aid. President Biden has directed the Pentagon to send munitions, and a carrier strike group is en route to the eastern Mediterranean. This international involvement adds another layer of complexity and concern regarding the escalation and its global repercussions, especially since nine Americans have already been reported killed in the conflict.

Questions are being raised about external involvement, specifically from Iran, which could have implications for broader geopolitics. Intelligence from within Israel is suggesting this event may have been months, if not years, in the planning and will have a lasting impact on Israeli national consciousness. If Iran, who has been in some good-faith meetings with the US recently, did play a part in these attacks, it could also mean war for the US.

The Humanitarian Cost
While the military strategies and political maneuvers unfold, it is crucial not to forget the human cost of this conflict. Large plumes of grey smoke can be seen rising from residential areas in several cities across Gaza. Hospitals are overrun, and ambulances have even been targeted. Gaza, already a densely populated area facing years of restrictions, is bearing a heavy burden.

Casualty numbers are grim, with roughly 700 Israelis killed (both civilian and IDF) and 493 Gazans killed at the time of the report. Injuries are also in the thousands for both sides.

Ethical and Moral Concerns
Israel’s military actions have brought up questions concerning the proportionality and ethical implications of their response. There is an increasing call from various quarters to minimize civilian casualties and ensure that the basic human rights of the people in Gaza are not violated. On the flip side, Israel argues that the paradigm has changed, citing the severity of the Hamas invasion as the rationale behind their current strategy for an all-out offensive. Still, the loss of innocent lives on both sides necessitates an examination of the ethics of warfare, particularly in densely populated civilian areas.

The Role of Iran and Broader Implications
As already stated, according to reports, Iran played a role in plotting the Hamas invasion over several weeks, thus complicating Israel's response further. This brings into play the broader geopolitics of the Middle East and raises the stakes for Israel and its allies, who now must consider the implications of Iran’s involvement and the spread of violence to other Palestinian areas.

Conclusion
As the conflict enters its third day, the situation remains tense and unpredictable. While Israel's objective may be to incapacitate Hamas, which it sees as a terrorist organization, there are pressing ethical and humanitarian concerns that cannot be ignored. This is not just about the survival of a state but also about the very essence of what it means to be human.

There is a collective call—from Christians, Jews, and all who hold the value of human life dear—for prayer, reflection, and a ceaseless quest for peace. While the world waits for the swords to be sheathed, it is time to ponder on the long-term consequences, not just for Israel and Gaza but for a world increasingly embroiled in the complexities of war, politics, and human suffering.

BREAKING: Surprise Missile Attack on Israel

10/7/23

Israel faced one of its broadest invasions in five decades early Saturday morning, October 7, 2023. Palestinian militants launched a complex and multi-faceted assault on southern Israel, causing significant loss of life, capturing Israeli civilians and soldiers, and firing thousands of rockets into Israeli cities.

The Attacks
The assault involved the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, infiltrating Israeli towns and army bases from the Gaza Strip. Thousands of missiles were launched, and incredible casualties continue to come in. According to the Israeli military, fighting was ongoing in at least five locations in southern Israel by the early evening. Emergency medical services reported at least 100 Israelis killed, while Israel's retaliation led to at least 198 Palestinians killed, as per the Gazan Health Ministry.

The multi-pronged assault involved infiltrations into Israeli towns and military camps, as well as the firing of thousands of rockets toward central and southern Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared, "We are at war," as his nation's rescue service accounted for the Israeli lives lost. Simultaneously, Gaza's Health Ministry reported that in addition to the Palestinian deaths, nearly 1,700 people were wounded in the conflict.

Global and regional reactions to this devastating event vary but mostly call for an end to the violence. Governments across the Middle East have issued balanced statements recognizing the complexity of the situation. They acknowledge both the U.S. support for Israel's full-scale response to the attack and the public sentiment regarding the suffering of Palestinians living in Gaza. The United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Turkey have all called for immediate restraint and a ceasefire. Saudi Arabia also emphasized the necessity of a peace process, warning that the lack of one could lead to an "explosive situation." Meanwhile, Qatar placed the responsibility for the current escalation solely on Israel, citing ongoing violations of Palestinian rights. The call for peace grows increasingly desperate as both sides endure escalating violence and loss.

The Hostages
Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the chief spokesman for the Israeli military, confirmed that hostages had been taken, providing another layer of complexity to an already volatile situation. These hostages are no doubt meant to act as bargaining chips as Israel mounts a counteroffensive.

Multi-Front Warfare
The attack was notable for its complexity. Militants entered Israel by land, sea, and air, marking some of the first pitched battles between large groups of Israeli and Arab forces on Israeli soil in decades. At least 22 Israeli towns were affected, with militants abducting both soldiers and civilians.

Political Context
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the country to arms, announcing a military reserve call-up and declaring, "We are at war and we will win it." This attack comes at a critical juncture for Israel, which has been grappling with societal cohesion and the military's readiness amidst political turmoil over the judiciary's power. The geopolitical consequences are immense. Questions arise about the intelligence failure on the part of the Israeli administration, led by a Prime Minister whose political platform has been rooted in security. Benjamin Netanyahu’s regime has hinged on the promise that he could keep the country safe. This attack tests the resolve of his administration, keeping the rest of the world on edge to watch what happens next.

International Reaction
President Biden termed the attack as an “appalling assault,” promising to stand with Israel. Other Western powers also criticized Hamas, framing the violence as an attack against the Israeli blockade and as a defense of the Aqsa Mosque—a site sacred to both Muslims and Jews.

Reflection:
A Biblical reflection feels necessary, yet difficult to fully apply. God calls us to peace, yet the defense of the Jewish people within Israel also comes to mind. Every country ought to be entitled to self-defense, but when is it good to put down the sword and aim our efforts at peace? Not to mention, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has deep and historical roots. The hurt between these two people groups is ancient, and we are heartbroken that even more life has been taken in its wake.

In times of conflict, it's crucial to remember the teachings of Christ about peace and reconciliation. Matthew 5:9 says, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God." As Christians, it's essential to pray for peace, for the comfort of those who have lost loved ones, and for wisdom for leaders to navigate this difficult time.

In 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, Paul writes, "We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed." As believers, we can hold onto the hope that, even in the darkest times, God's love and peace will prevail. This attack serves as a reminder that in our complex world, strife can arise at any moment. As such, Christians are called to be vigilant in prayer, balanced in our understanding, and rooted in our commitment to peace.
