The suspect, also a student, was later found dead inside the school from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have identified the shooter as a 15-year-old girl.

The incident unfolded just before 11 a.m. in the middle of a school day. Students and staff described chaos as the school’s intercom blared a lockdown announcement. “This is not a drill,” it warned. Children as young as kindergarten were escorted into the cold without coats, holding hands for safety.

One sixth-grader, Breken Ives, recounted hearing “bangs and screaming” while huddled in his classroom corner, as his teacher tried to shield the students from view. Outside, emergency responders swiftly transported victims to nearby hospitals, including the University of Wisconsin Health and SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital.

Lives Lost and Families Reeling
Among those who died were a teenage student and a dedicated teacher. Their names have not yet been released. Of the six injured, two remain in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. School official Barbara Wiers praised the students’ courage during the ordeal, stating that “they handled themselves magnificently” despite their fear. Parents, gathered at a reunification center, prayed and supported one another while waiting to reunite with their children.

This marks the 323rd school shooting in the U.S. this year, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database. Tragically, private schools, often viewed as sanctuaries, are not immune. The attack recalls similar tragedies, including last year’s shooting at a private Christian school in Nashville.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway urged the community to seek mental health support, adding, “We must work to ensure no family or community endures this heartbreak again.”
