The Kennedy & West Candidacies: A Dive into the Independent Wave
Independent Candidates The Wave of the Future?

Here’s the gist of what’s happening with a prayer…
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is bidding sayonara to the Democrats, going indie, and might just mess up the sequel to Biden vs. Trump. His transition comes after too many snubs from the DNC. But here's the kicker, more Republicans than Democrats like him. Who knew? Add to this circus other indie stars like Cornel West and the "No Labels" gang, and suddenly you've got more than a two-horse race.
Dear Lord, in a time when division seems to be the national pastime, may we find the wisdom to appreciate the complexity in others and in ourselves. Guide us toward unity without sacrificing the virtues that make us unique. Whether RFK Jr. is a catalyst for change or a sideshow, let his run remind us to reflect on the kind of nation we aim to be. Amen.
The Kennedy & West Candidacies:
A Dive into the Independent Wave
Tired of the daily tussle between red and blue, conservative and liberal, right and left? Well, it appears America’s political reality show has added a twist: an independent bid by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., one of the latest manifestations of our nation's simmering desire for an alternative option.
Spoiler Alert or Showstopper?
RFK Jr., once a Democratic candidate, bid adieu to the party ties to run as an independent. His potential spoiler role in the 2024 elections could throw a wrench into the well-oiled machines of President Biden and possibly former President Trump. All signs point to those two geriatric titans clashing again—but is a third-party candidate precisely what Americans have been clamoring for?
Where the Wind Blows
Kennedy’s announcement came as a surprise to many, but it shouldn’t have. The DNC made it clear that they wouldn’t give platforms to any of Biden’s competitors. But perhaps the DNC shouldn’t have been worried about Kennedy’s candidacy as a Democrat. Surveys show that 48% of Republicans have a favorable view of RFK Jr., compared to only 21% of Democrats. That's not a typo—more Republicans than Democrats seem to like Kennedy.
The Third-Party Merry-Go-Round
RFK Jr. isn’t alone. Cornel West, the intellectual giant with a knack for poetry and philosophy, has also abandoned party affiliations to run as an independent. And let's not forget No Labels, a group considering its own moderate presidential ticket.
The Establishment Strikes Back
Predictably, the two major parties are dismissing third-party challengers. Biden’s advisers pooh-pooh the idea that anyone would stray from the binary path. On the flip side, the Republican National Committee tells us that a "Democrat in Independent’s clothing is still a Democrat." A lovely zinger that would surely get a chuckle if political affiliations were as simple as a costume change. But they aren’t. Although it may be too late for an independent candidate to make a dent, all polls show that Americans are generally fed up with the two-party system. While candidates like Robert Kennedy Jr. and Cornell West definitely have an uphill battle on their hands to become president, one must wonder if they are trailblazers for the generation that will come after them.
Family Feud
In an intriguing subplot, Kennedy's family members have distanced themselves, saying his independent run is "dangerous to our country." Shakespeare couldn’t have written a better family drama if he tried. This comes as little surprise since the Kennedy family is synonymous with Democrat legacy.
Conspiracy & Controversy
It’s worth noting that, while Kennedy has wooed some of the electorate with his environmental credentials, he’s not without controversial baggage. His views on vaccines and other health issues have come under scrutiny. He defends himself, saying his views are misconstrued. But let’s be real: he’s not doing himself any favors with such murky rhetoric as well as his published books on the topic.
The Crux of the Matter
At the end of the day, this shake-up could very well be a manifestation of a deeper yearning for something beyond the left-right paradigm. The established paths seem to be converging into a road to nowhere. This recent rise in Independent bids might not threaten Biden or Trump, but keep an eye on third parties in the coming years. The two-party system has proven fragile lately, with infighting and differences looming large in the House as we speak. But doesn’t it make sense? Don’t most people hold a handful of beliefs, opinions, and passions that don’t always fall neatly into the right/left dichotomy?
Reflection
The divisiveness we see today calls to mind the words of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew: "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand" (Matthew 12:25). Let’s be clear, this verse mostly hast to do with Jesus’ response to his skeptics. But there is a foundational truth here we can apply. As much as Kennedy’s run adds complexity to the political landscape, it also serves as a catalyst for conversations about unity and alternative paths. Could God be using such events to force us to reconsider our divided state and seek a more harmonious path? Maybe, just maybe, this is an invitation for us to reflect not just on our political choices but on the virtues we want to uphold as a nation.
So whether Kennedy is a harbinger of change or a mere distraction, his run is another episode in America’s never-ending, increasingly complex political drama
