Dear Lord,
Today we are mindful that nobody is perfect, including ourselves. Yet you love us anyways. Even in our brokenness and dysfunction, you are patient and kind to us. You offered us grace even though we didn’t deserve it. You offer us eternal life with you despite our failures. We pray you would transform our hearts today, so we may also extend that grace and understanding to others. Make us more like you, Lord. Always seeking justice but never sacrificing love.

Here’s today’s news: cut to be short, sweet, and Christ-centered…

1. Tech & Trust: Amazon Locks Smart Home Due to Misunderstood ‘Racism’

A Baltimore resident, Brandon Jackson, found his smart home locked due to an alleged 'racist' remark reported by an Amazon delivery driver. Jackson was not at home during the alleged incident and provided video/audio evidence to Amazon to prove his innocence. Despite this, it took several days for his account to be restored, during which time his entire smart home system was rendered useless. This situation highlights the pervasive power of tech giants and the potential for flawed systems to disrupt lives based on unsubstantiated allegations.

Prayer Request: Lord, we pray for wisdom and discernment as we integrate technology into our lives. Protect us from misuse of power and help us to demand transparency and justice from tech providers. Guide us to be alert and mindful as we navigate this digital landscape. Amen.

2. Candid with China: US and China Begin Talks Amid Strained Relations

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken held "candid" talks with Chinese officials, aiming to stabilize an increasingly strained relationship between the two nations. Significant topics during these talks included the status of Taiwan, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, trade disputes, the US's fentanyl drug crisis, and Chinese human rights conduct. No major breakthroughs are expected from this trip, but the act of dialogue itself is seen as a stride toward mending frayed ties. Blinken also expressed hope to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in the coming months.

Prayer Request: Heavenly Father, we pray for guidance and wisdom for our world leaders as they navigate complex diplomatic relationships. Inspire them with Your spirit of peace, respect, and mutual understanding. Help them make decisions that lead to lasting peace and the betterment of all people involved. Amen.

3. In The Wake of George Floyd: Minneapolis PD Receives Scathing Grade

The Justice Department presented a damning evaluation of the Minneapolis police force, citing rampant racial discrimination and excessive force. This followed the conviction of former officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd. The report documented numerous instances of excessive force, racial discrimination, and violations of the First Amendment. However, some improvements were noted, and the city and police department agreed to federally overseen reforms.

Prayer Request: Dear Lord, we pray for all those who serve in law enforcement that they might act justly and uphold the dignity of all people. We pray for those who have been victims of excessive force or discrimination. May they find justice and healing. Grant us the courage and wisdom to stand against systemic injustice and advocate for necessary reforms without abandoning the good men and women who serve to protect and preserve our society. Amen.

Tech & Trust:
Amazon Locks Smart Home Due to Misunderstood ‘Racism’

This incident serves as a reminder to demand transparency and justice from technology providers and to seek discernment while navigating the digital landscape actively.

In a recent startling incident that throws light on the dominance of tech giants in our everyday life, Brandon Jackson, a Baltimore resident, found his smart home locked due to an alleged 'racist' remark reported by an Amazon delivery driver.

As Jackson found himself unable to access his Amazon account, he discovered that the issue lay not with forgotten passwords or system glitches but an unexpected allegation of racial insensitivity. The delivery driver claimed to have heard a 'racist remark' as he was dropping off a package at Jackson's home, an assertion that led to the suspension of Jackson's account.

Jackson, a black man living in a predominantly black neighborhood, was not at home at the time of the incident. He managed to procure video footage from his smart doorbell, verifying that the automated response to the delivery driver was innocuous, "Excuse me, can I help you?" The delivery driver, who was wearing headphones at the time, misunderstood the automated response to be Jackson himself saying something racist.

Jackson contacted Amazon and provided video/audio evidence showing that he was not home, nor was the automated response saying anything remotely racist. Despite giving evidence, Jackson had to wait days for his account to be restored. Amazon, it appears, did not apologize or acknowledge any fault in rendering Jackson's entire system useless.

Jackson’s situation invites us to question the pervasive power of companies like Amazon, Google, Apple, and Microsoft and their impartiality in navigating our social and political landscape. These tech behemoths, touching every facet of our life, from communication to transportation, are increasingly viewed as more than just utility providers. Companies are beginning to blur the lines between neutral service providers and arbiters of social and political justice. We know, as followers of Christ, that not everything we believe is going to be accepted by the world. Jesus warned us in John 15:20, “A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.” We must be alert and mindful not to put too much trust in corporate or political institutions, for our true citizenship is in heaven.

In this incident, we see the power of a potentially flawed system to disrupt lives based on unsubstantiated allegations. Be mindful and alert, brothers and sisters. Be prayerful and seek discernment as we allow these businesses into our homes and lives. The threat extends beyond smart home technology, affecting email accounts, cloud storage, or even banking services, thus underscoring the need for adequate checks and balances in exercising corporate power.

In conclusion, as we integrate technology into our lives, we must be mindful of the delicate balance between convenience and control. It's a reminder to be wary of the power we willingly give to technology providers and to demand transparency and justice actively. Just as Jesus warns us in Matthew 24:4, "Take heed that no one deceives you," we, too, must be discerning as we navigate the digital landscape.

Candid with China:
US and China Begin Talks Amid Strained Relations

Democracy and Reality: A Christian Perspective on the Current Global Struggle

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently embarked on a significant trip to China, engaging in "candid" talks with Chinese officials, marking the first such visit by a top US diplomat in nearly five years.

Blinken underscored the importance of diplomacy and maintaining "open channels of communication" in these meetings, as revealed by a statement from the US State Department. Colossians 4:6 says, "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone," We are keeping a close eye on the communication between the US and China, urging God to instill graciousness and wisdom in the dialogue, particularly when things heat up.

The primary objective of these Beijing talks, as reported by US officials, is to stabilize an increasingly strained relationship between the two nations. China's Foreign Minister Qin Gang reciprocated this intention, affirming Beijing's commitment to fostering a "stable, predictable and constructive relationship" with the US.

Taiwan's status emerged as a crucial topic during the discussions, with Minister Qin identifying it as the "most prominent risk" to China-US relations. For Beijing, the Taiwan issue is regarded as one of "China's core interests," reflecting China's perspective of Taiwan as a breakaway province expected to be under its control eventually. In contrast, Taiwan views itself as distinct from the Chinese mainland, guided by its own constitution and leadership.

The role of the United States in the Taiwan-China dynamic is critical. Last year, US President Joe Biden assured the US would defend Taiwan against potential attacks from China, a move Beijing condemned. Isaiah 1:17 says, "Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed." We are mindful of God’s desire for dignity and justice to be given to all people. Still, we also understand the relationship between China and Taiwan is vastly complex and can’t be simply explained through the lens of “right” and “wrong.” We want to empathize with Taiwan’s desire for independence while not rooting for war in the process.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, trade disputes over advanced computer technologies, the US's fentanyl drug crisis, and Chinese human rights conduct were among the topics expected to be discussed during Blinken's visit.

Although no major breakthroughs are anticipated from this trip, the act of dialogue itself is a significant stride towards mending the frayed ties between the two superpowers. As Christians, we're reminded of Matthew 5:9, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God." In this light, the US's effort to foster communication and dialogue can be seen as a step towards peace.

Amid skepticism from the Chinese officials regarding the sincerity of the US's reconciliation efforts, Blinken emphasized the need for communication to prevent the competition with China from escalating into conflict. He stated, “If we want to make sure, as we do, that the competition we have with China doesn't veer into conflict, the place you start is with communicating."

Blinken also expressed his hope to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in the coming months. This meeting could serve as a milestone in pursuing better relations, recalling the brief respite in tensions during the meeting between Presidents Biden and Xi Jinping in Bali last November.

The successful conduct of these dialogues hinges on trust, respect, and a mutual commitment to peace – values that resonate deeply with our faith. It reminds us all that dialogue, understanding, and reconciliation are critical pillars in resolving global disputes and fostering lasting peace.

In The Wake of George Floyd:
Minneapolis PD Receives Scathing Grade

The Justice Department recently presented a damning evaluation of the Minneapolis police force, citing unchecked racial discrimination and excessive force leading up to the killing of George Floyd. This report sheds light on the pervasive issues facing the police department, causing us to consider the character of Christ and how he calls us to handle these situations. We will reflect on that at the end.

The investigation began in April 2021, following the conviction of former officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd, a black man whose death spurred a national reckoning over racial injustice. The probe aimed to uncover potential patterns of unconstitutional or unlawful practices within the Minneapolis Police Department. The key findings from the report reveal numerous instances of excessive force, unlawful discrimination, and violations of the First Amendment. The investigators scrutinized 19 police shootings and found cases where officers fired without first ascertaining the immediate threat to themselves or others. Further, the report highlighted the department's ongoing use of neck restraints – similar to the one Chauvin used on Floyd – despite being officially banned following Floyd's death. The report also documents evidence of rampant racism and racial profiling, which extend beyond traffic stops and into arrests. For instance, a black teenager was held at gunpoint for allegedly stealing a $5 burrito. When handling mental health crises, the police department's response often exacerbated the situation. These incidents reflect a lack of understanding and compassion toward those suffering from mental health issues.

The report additionally uncovered issues in handling police misconduct complaints, with investigations taking excessive lengths of time and frequently failing to review corroborative video evidence. Supervisors often sided with their subordinates in cases of misconduct. These findings underline the lack of accountability within the department and highlight the dire need for reform.

Despite the grim findings, the report notes some improvements in the department, such as banning chokeholds and no-knock warrants and introducing mental health workers in some incidents. However, much more work remains to be done. Consequently, the city and police department agreed to a federal consent decree, necessitating reforms overseen by an independent monitor and approved by a federal judge.

How can we successfully balance our support for people in law enforcement while also keeping people in power accountable for their abuse and prejudice?

The Bible supports those appointed to protect and preserve civil society. Namely, Romans 13 says, “Therefore he who resists the authority withstands the ordinance of God, and those who withstand will receive to themselves judgment. Rulers are not a terror to the good work but to the evil. Do you desire to have no fear of authority? Do that which is good, and you will have praise from the authority, for he is a servant of God to you for good. But if you do that which is evil, be afraid, for he doesn’t bear the sword in vain; for he is a servant of God, an avenger for wrath to him who does evil.” Paul, in Romans, parses out the idea that if you follow the law, you shouldn’t have anything to fear from law enforcement. Upright citizens will always have a much better relationship with ministers of justice.

However, we recognize that there is no perfectly pure institution. Everybody has the potential for sin and corruption, even police officers and departments. So, what do we do when some bad eggs get too much power? Proverbs 31 calls for us to “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all the destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." When clear trends point us toward abuse of power, discrimination, and lack of respect for human dignity, we are called to act. Jesus advocated for those repressed and rejected by the corrupt religious system of the time. Reforming corrupt systems shows us respect for the institution because we know it can be greater.

Let’s pray for our society as we balance justice, equality, safety, and sanctity of life.
