News Out of Israel: World Leaders Take Charge

Western leaders, support Israel's right to defend itself but press it to do more to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Here’s the gist of what’s happening with a prayer…

Amid escalating conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza following attacks by Hamas, world leaders are calling on Israel to reevaluate its military strategies to minimize civilian casualties. French President Emmanuel Macron met with Israeli officials, emphasizing the need for a "targeted and focused" approach to self-defense that abides by rules. Meanwhile, the U.S. has deployed advanced military defense systems to the Middle East and engaged Iranian proxies, signaling bipartisan support for deepening involvement. China and President Joe Biden have called for immediate humanitarian relief and a ceasefire, while the major challenge remains how to address the conflict without causing significant loss of civilian life.

As our prayer for today, we will pray the Song of Ascents by David in Psalm 122:

I was glad when they said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the Lord!”
Our feet have been standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem!
Jerusalem—built as a city
that is bound firmly together,
to which the tribes go up,
the tribes of the Lord,
as was decreed for Israel,
to give thanks to the name of the Lord.
There thrones for judgment were set,
the thrones of the house of David.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem!
“May they be secure who love you!
Peace be within your walls
and security within your towers!”
For my brothers and companions' sake
I will say, “Peace be within you!”
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
I will seek your good.

News Out of Israel:
World Leaders Take Charge

Amid an escalating humanitarian crisis and a conflict rife with geopolitical ramifications, world leaders are urging Israel to reevaluate its military strategies in Gaza to minimize civilian casualties. The call comes as the Israeli military continues its aggressive air campaign, an aftermath of Hamas attacks on Oct. 7 that left 1,400 people dead and at least 222 kidnapped.

Macron Leads Diplomatic Push
French President Emmanuel Macron was the latest to visit Israel, assuring the nation that France stands "shoulder to shoulder" with it while subtly cautioning that Israel's fight should remain "targeted and focused." Macron met with both Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the current crisis. He insisted that while Israel had the right to self-defense, the fight "must be without mercy, but not without rules." It's a chilling yet tempered statement if we’ve ever heard one.

Western Support Amid Humanitarian Concerns
Macron's visit marks a series of high-profile trips by Western leaders, supporting Israel's right to defend itself but simultaneously pressing it to do more to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. "This battle is civilization's battle; it is Europe's battle, America's battle," Netanyahu stated, framing the war as an ideological conflict that goes beyond borders.

Israeli and U.S. Perspectives
Israeli authorities, while acknowledging the tragedy of civilian casualties, place the blame on Hamas. Netanyahu argues that Hamas' positioning within densely populated civilian areas makes the military operation complex and perilous. Meanwhile, American officials have also raised concerns about Israel's current plans, doubting the feasibility of a ground invasion, given Gaza's intricate network of underground tunnels. Former Hamas hostage Yocheved Lifshitz, 85, said she "went through a hell I could never imagine," And noted that Hamas has an interconnected “spiderweb” of tunnels they use to travel throughout the region. The Pentagon has dispatched officers to Israel to assist in planning a possible urban warfare strategy.

U.S. Military Preparations
U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has ordered the deployment of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and additional Patriot batteries to the Middle East. These are not typically weapons used against groups like Hamas or Hezbollah but are geared for defending against the advanced military capabilities of a country like Iran.

On the coast of Yemen, the USS Carney, a guided missile destroyer, engaged in an hours-long shootdown of multiple drones and missiles. This deployment signals the U.S.'s deepening engagement against Iranian proxies in Iraq, Syria, and now off the coast of Yemen. Interestingly, Washington's response appears to be one of the rare instances of bipartisan agreement. Senator Lindsey Graham recently visited Tel Aviv, joined by an ideologically diverse group of senators who all collectively state that war with Iran is a real possibility.

Moreover, the conflict has left more than 5,000 people dead in Gaza, with more than half of the territory's population displaced. Israel's military has urged civilians in northern Gaza, the focal point of their operations, to flee, although safe passage is hardly guaranteed. Despite some criticism aimed at Israel for its invasion, it has continually warned residents of Gaza to flee, evacuate, and take cover before attacking - a courtesy obviously not extended by Hamas.

Biden's Take and Chinese Diplomacy
U.S. President Joe Biden, while advocating for the release of all remaining hostages, underscored the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in Gaza. Meanwhile, China has called for an immediate ceasefire and the resumption of peace talks based on a two-state solution. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed that while nations have a right to self-defense, international humanitarian law should not be forsaken.

Strategic Quandary
The major obstacle is that Israeli Defense Forces have yet to propose a clear plan that could achieve Prime Minister Netanyahu’s objective of eradicating Hamas without causing a significant loss of civilian lives. The U.S. officials pointed out that either tactic—whether surgical airstrikes or a full-scale ground invasion—would result in heavy losses.

Reflection
As Christians, we are called to pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6). However, peace is more than the absence of conflict; it's the presence of justice and the safeguarding of human dignity. While Israel has a right to defend itself, the commitment must extend to protecting innocent lives on both sides. "Blessed are the peacemakers," Jesus said (Matthew 5:9). May those who hold power heed this divine wisdom to foster peace, guided by justice and compassion.

The situation in Israel and Gaza remains fluid. We pray for a swift resolution that minimizes further loss of innocent life.
