Hereâs todayâs news: cut short and sweet with a prayerâŠ
1. Fires Devastate Maui
Wildfires, exacerbated by Hurricane Dora's winds, devastated Lahaina on Maui, causing the loss of 58 lives and displacing thousands. Hawaii's unique vegetation and cultural connection to the land mean that the fires have a profound impact, with many landmarks and homes destroyed. Despite this tragedy, the community's spirit, exemplified by acts of kindness and resilience, remains strong and unbroken, with many stories of heroism emerging.
Lord, amidst the flames and loss, stand with the people of Lahaina and all facing nature's wrath. Strengthen their hearts, renew their spirits, and guide their path to healing and rebuilding. May the Spirit of 'Aloha' guide us all, reminding us of the boundless power of community and faith. HoÊ»Ćla i ka Äina. hoÊ»Ćla i na kamaÊ»Äina. Amen.
2. Checking In: 100 Days of the Writer/Actor Strike
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) are on strike, affecting not just writers and actors, but also countless behind-the-scenes workers. While some major celebrities have donated generously to help those affected, many in the industry are struggling to make ends meet. Both studios and unions are at an impasse, with the larger Hollywood community suffering the consequences.
Lord, guide the hearts and minds of those in conflict in Hollywood. May they find a resolution that honors each person's contributions and fosters unity. Remind us all to address our own unresolved grudges, seeking understanding and compassion before bitterness takes root. Amen.
3. Nurse/Missionary & Daughter Freed After Kidnapping in Haiti
Alix Dorsainvil, a nurse from New Hampshire, and her daughter were abducted in Haiti while serving at the Christian education ministry, El Roi Haiti. After the kidnappers demanded a $1 million ransom, the community united in prayer, and with the combined efforts of U.S. and Haitian officials, both were safely returned. Their ordeal showcases God's unwavering love, the strength of faith, and the power of community support.
Lord, thank You for the safe return of Alix and her daughter. Remind us of Your constant presence during our trials and that Your love never falters. Strengthen our faith and grant us peace that surpasses understanding. Amen.
Fires Devastate Maui
HoÊ»Ćla i ka Äina. HoÊ»Ćla i na KamaÊ»Äina.
Wildfires, intensified by winds from Hurricane Dora, have laid waste to the city of Lahaina on Maui, claiming at least 58 lives and leaving a trail of devastation. The flames, fanned by winds from a distant hurricane, have left the western side of the island nearly isolated, with thousands forced to evacuate. The once-thriving city of Lahaina, with its harbor and iconic banyan tree, now stands devastated. The impact is not just material. The fire has taken 36 lives, and there are still many people missing or separated from their families.
Anomalous weather patterns caused by the hurricane left the island unusually dry. A combination of dry wind, fallen trees, and power lines caused unbelievable damage. Even worse, the land of Hawaii is not adapted for fires like other cities on the mainland. When fires hit California, the trees are adapted to burn, release new seeds, and produce even more trees. This is not the case for much of the vegetation in Hawaii. Fires were very rare before modern cities were built on the island.
The emotional and cultural toll of the destruction is immeasurable. Lahaina, a city that has long been a beacon of Hawaiian culture, history, and tradition, now stands scarred and smoldering. The fires have consumed homes, businesses, and natural beauty, painting a grim picture of what was once a bustling tourist destination. Residents describe the scene as apocalyptic, with many fleeing into the ocean to escape the encroaching flames.
The culture of Hawaii is tied to the land - the âÄinaâ. When the land hurts, the people hurt. This fire has threatened lives, heritage, and the community of Lahaina. Yet the Spirit of 'Aloha' - love, peace, and compassion - prevails even amidst the tragedy. Stories of heroism and everyday citizens rising to help one another continue to flood in. KamaÊ»Äina (locals) helping each other, strangers offering aid, and the collective effort to combat the disaster showcase the enduring spirit of Hawaii.
In times of profound loss and devastation, it's essential to turn to our faith for solace and guidance. The Bible reminds us in Psalm 46:1-2, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea."
As we mourn the loss of life and cultural heritage, we must also remember the resilience of the human spirit and the power of community. Hawaiiâs history may have suffered a blow, but its spirit remains unbroken. The community will rebuild, and in doing so, they will create new stories and memories, adding to the rich tapestry of the islandâs strength and beauty.
In these trying times, let us come together in prayer, not just for the people of Lahaina but for all those affected by natural disasters worldwide. Let us pray for strength, resilience, and the hope to rebuild and restore. And as we do, let's remember Romans 8:18, "I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us."
Lord, hoÊ»Ćla i ka Äina. hoÊ»Ćla i na kamaÊ»Äina (Heal the land. Revive the children of the land.)

100 Days of the Writer/Actor Strike
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) have been on strike for months now, and the usual hustle and bustle of Hollywood has been preplaced with an angry, frustrated, and frenetic energy.
Imagine this: A writer, who last year penned an award-winning show, is now walking dogs for extra money. An actor, once playing a prominent role in an Emmy-nominated series, now helping his cousin clean carpets for some extra change. A dancer, who once dazzled audiences with her on-screen performances, is on a waitlist for a gig with Uber Eats. It's like a plot straight out of a Hollywood movie, but this is the reality for many in the industry today.
The strikes, which began in early May, have left many writers and actors in precarious financial situations. While the richer and more prominent people in the industry are sitting comfortably during the strike, many of the other workers have found their savings slowly draining away with each passing day. Negotiations between the unions and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers are at a standstill.
The SAG-AFTRA Foundation, recognizing the challenges faced by its members, has stepped up, processing a record number of applications for emergency aid. Thanks to generous donations from A-list stars like George Clooney, Meryl Streep, and Oprah Winfrey, the foundation raised over $15 million in July alone. It's heartwarming to see the Hollywood community come together, supporting one another in times of need.
But one must wonder if this is a sustainable path forward. Studios have found a way to stay afloat without talent, recycling old content and relying on reality TV. The big studios claimed to have offered more than a fair deal, but it hasnât seemed to move the unions. As previously reported, this strike affects more than just the actors and writers. Camera operators, vendors, caterers, editors, designers, and hundreds of thousands of other non-actors and writers have been out of work. They donât get any of that money from Clooney and Streep. If the studios and unions donât reach an agreement quickly, more and more people will be affected.
In the midst of this challenging chapter for Hollywood, there's a lesson to be learned that resonates with Jesusâs words in Matthew 5. âThis is how I want you to conduct yourself in these matters. If you enter your place of worship and, about to make an offering, you suddenly remember a grudge a friend has against you, abandon your offering, leave immediately, go to this friend and make things right. Then and only then, come back and work things out with God.â Jesus encourages us to resolve conflict swiftly. So much so that if you are going to worship, you should stop and settle things before returning. This is because unresolved conflict if left to fester, could become toxic.
Letâs consider grudges and unresolved conflicts in our own lives that need to be addressed. Have you gone about your business, even gone to worship God, with harbored bitterness and resentment towards someone else? Jesus encouraged us in Matthew 18:15, âIf your brother sins against you, go, show him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained back your brother.â Life is short, and we often waste too much time stewing in bitterness.
Letâs pray for the people striking in Hollywood as well as the production companies. We will pray for a resolution that honors workers and brings joy.
Nurse/Missionary & Daughter Freed After Kidnapping in Haiti
In a world where headlines often bring tales of sorrow and despair, today we celebrate a story of hope, faith, and divine intervention. The power of prayer and the grace of God have once again shown their might in the heart of Haiti.
Alix Dorsainvil, a dedicated nurse from New Hampshire, and her precious daughter were kidnapped near Port-au-Prince, Haiti, while serving at the Christian education ministry, El Roi Haiti. Their sudden abduction sent shockwaves through the community and beyond. But today, we rejoice in their safe return, a testament to God's unwavering love and the strength of a community united in prayer.
Alix's journey to Haiti began in 2010, driven by her commitment to Christ and a desire to serve those in need. She married Sandro Dorsainvil, the founder of El Roi Haiti and a Liberty University graduate, in 2021. Their shared faith and dedication to the Haitian community have been a beacon of hope for many. Even in the face of adversity, Alix's life has been a testament to walking in the footsteps of Jesus.
The day of her abduction was like any other. Alix was tending to patients in a small clinic when armed men stormed in. Witnesses recall the fear and chaos of that moment. Lormina Louima, a patient present during the abduction, recounted the harrowing experience, "When I saw the gun, I was so scared." The kidnappers demanded a staggering $1 million ransom, leaving the community and the Dorsainvil family in anguish.
But in the midst of this darkness, a light shone brightly. The community rallied, prayers were lifted, and faith remained unshaken. The U.S. Department of State collaborated with Haitian officials, working tirelessly to ensure the safe return of Alix and her daughter. While the specifics of their release remain confidential, one thing is clear: God was at work.
El Roi Haiti, named after the Hebrew term for "the God who sees," expressed their profound gratitude in a heartfelt statement, "Today we are praising God for answered prayer!" They further reflected on the ordeal, drawing strength from 1 Peter 5:10, emphasizing God's promise to restore, support, and strengthen after times of suffering.
The story of Alix and her daughter's safe return is a powerful reminder of the enduring love and protection of our Heavenly Father. In the face of adversity, when the storms of life seem overwhelming, it's easy to feel lost and alone. But as Christians, we are reminded that God is always with us, guiding us through our darkest hours.
Paul, in Philippians 4:7, speaks of "the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding." This peace is not the absence of trouble but the presence of Christ in the midst of it. Alix's story is a testament to this peace. Even in the face of unimaginable difficulty, God's presence was felt, and His peace prevailed.
In our own lives, we may face challenges that test our faith and resolve. But let us remember the story of Alix and her daughter and the countless other testimonies of God's faithfulness. Let us hold fast to the promise that, even in our struggles, God is working for our good.
In closing, let us offer a prayer of thanksgiving:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the safe return of Alix and her daughter. We praise You for Your faithfulness and the power of prayer. As we face our own challenges, help us to remember Your promises and to find peace in Your presence. Strengthen our faith, and let us be a beacon of hope to those around us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
