Election News: Pence Drops Out of Presidential Race
Former Vice President Mike Pence has suspended his campaign for the 2024 presidential race

Here’s the gist of what’s happening with a prayer…
Former Vice President Mike Pence has suspended his campaign for the 2024 presidential race, citing low poll numbers and fundraising difficulties as key factors. His decision to drop out has led to speculation about which other Republican candidates might also exit the race, especially given the dominance of former President Donald Trump in the GOP field. The upcoming Republican debate could serve as a critical moment for determining the viability of other candidates. Pence's exit leaves a gap in terms of support from social conservatives and evangelicals, with candidates like Tim Scott, Ron DeSantis, and Nikki Haley likely to vie for this voting bloc.
Dear Lord, we lift up Mike Pence and all those involved in the public sphere who aim to live out their faith courageously. Give them wisdom and grace as they navigate the complexities of leadership and public opinion. May your guidance be clear for all candidates in the upcoming election, that they may seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly. Help us, as voters and citizens, to be discerning and thoughtful, remembering to be the 'salt and light' you call us to be. Amen.
Election News: Pence Drops Out of Presidential Race
Former Vice President Mike Pence announced that he is suspending his campaign for the 2024 presidential race. Speaking at the Republican Jewish Coalition's annual leadership meeting in Las Vegas, Pence stated, "I came here to say it's become clear to me this is not my time," signaling an end to his bid for the presidency.
The Big Question: Who Will Follow?
The suspension of Pence's campaign has opened up a proverbial Pandora's box. GOP insiders suggest Pence won't be the last to exit the stage. With a Republican field still dominated by former President Donald Trump, RJC Chief Executive Officer Matt Brooks noted, "There’s no question others will follow suit. The question is one of timing."
Veteran Republican consultant Ari Fleischer emphasized the inevitability of consolidation: "It happens in every cycle… this field will shrink."
The Struggle that Led to Pence's Exit
Pence's campaign had struggled to gain momentum since its launch in June 2023. Despite spending substantial time in early voting states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, his poll numbers remained consistently low. Fundraising was also a concern; his campaign struggled to meet the financial criteria for participation in the third Republican debate scheduled for November 8th in Miami. These shortcomings eventually prompted Pence's decision to suspend his campaign.
Impact on Upcoming Debates
Notably, failure to qualify for the upcoming debate could serve as a 'weeding out' moment for other candidates. Currently, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, Chris Christie, and Tim Scott have confirmed their participation in the debate, meeting both the polling and donor criteria. Meanwhile, candidates like Doug Burgum and Asa Hutchinson still remain in limbo.
The Potential Consolidation and its Impact
Longtime GOP strategist David Kochel states that "this is the beginning of the winnowing of the field." But not everyone is expected to bow out immediately. As Dave Carney, a national Republican consultant, notes, "the money and the ego" will keep some candidates in the race for a while longer.
Experts predict that the real attrition will take place between the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. They expect only four or five candidates to be left standing at the start of next year.
Where Do Pence's Supporters Go?
Pence had been working diligently to win over social conservatives and evangelicals, particularly in Iowa. With his exit, these groups are up for grabs. According to Nicole Schlinger, an Iowa-based conservative strategist, Tim Scott seems to be the candidate most naturally aligned with Pence supporters. Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley will also likely vie for this voting bloc.
Reflection
Mike Pence has been a strong advocate for conservative Christian values throughout his political career. Whether or not one aligns with his political views, his openness about his faith is commendable. In Ephesians 6:19-20, the Apostle Paul wrote, "Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should."
Pence's fearless declaration of his faith amidst the political battlefield stands as an inspiration. His unwavering Biblical convictions should serve as a reminder to us all to be bold in our faith, even in the most challenging of public spheres.
In a political climate often marred by hesitancy and political correctness, Mike Pence stands out as someone who dared to integrate his faith into his public service. Many Christ-loving believers disagree on some of his stances, but there is still something to be said about a politician who proclaims the name of Jesus any chance he gets. As Christians, regardless of our political leanings, we can look to Pence's example as a reminder to live out our faith courageously and, in doing so, become the 'salt and the light' that Christ calls us to be.
