Biden Visits Maui, The New Space Race, & Meet the Candidates

"My little children, let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.” (1 John 3:18)

Today’s News at a Glance:

  1. Biden receives a mixed welcoming from Maui residents and media outlets.

  2. Space races aren’t what they used to be…

  3. We give an overview of the eight Republican candidates debating on Wednesday night.

Good Morning!
The Bible is swift to remind us that none are righteous. We are all imperfect people in need of a savior. Praise God that He came and died for us. Otherwise, we would all be lost. Whenever we offer criticism of leaders, it is always through that lens. Hopefully, we grow for the better through the truth of God’s word and accountability to the people around us. It’s not that we will ever be sinless, but perhaps by the grace and power of God, we will sin less. As we offer critiques and feedback about leaders, remember that we do so with compassion and hope that we can all rise to be better today than we were yesterday.

We’re glad you’re here. We pray this take on the news leaves you informed and transformed.

"My little children, let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.” (1 John 3:18)

Dear Lord,
Help us to embody this teaching in our daily lives. Move us beyond mere words and empty promises to a love that is active, sincere, and reflective of Your love for us. Teach us to show compassion to those around us, to reach out to the hurting, to be generous with our time and resources, and to genuinely care for the needs of others. May our lives be a living testimony of Your love, not just in what we say but in what we do. Help us live authentically, loving others as You have loved us, with selfless, forgiving, and unconditional love. Thank you, Lord, for Your perfect example of love in Jesus Christ and the opportunity to share that love with the world. In the loving name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Smaller Bites

Here’s today’s news: cut short and sweet with a prayer…

1. Biden Visits Maui: Aid Promised & Locals Protest

President Joe Biden's response to the tragic wildfire in Maui, Hawaii, has led to contrasting reactions between local and national media. While the President has pledged support and empathy for the affected community, local media and residents have criticized his actions as being too late and inadequate, expressing frustration over FEMA's absence and the lack of necessary supplies.

Heavenly Father, we pray for the people of Maui for their strength, healing, and recovery from this devastating tragedy. May those in leadership positions act with compassion, urgency, and wisdom to support and rebuild the community. Help us all remember that true love and care are shown through our actions, not just words. Guide us in being present and supportive for those who suffer, and inspire us to live in truth and deed. Amen.

2. The Space Race: The Moon's South Pole

The moon's South Pole has become the focus of a new international space race involving both nations and private companies, aiming for landing, resource extraction, and potential colonization. This week, Russia suffered a setback with a failed attempt to land a spacecraft on the South Pole, while India's more budget-conscious program is poised to make history. The new era of space exploration includes collaboration between government and private industry, such as SpaceX and Blue Origin, and is driven by the lure of lunar resources like water, which can be critical for human activities and fuel production.

Heavenly Creator, we stand in awe of the boundless universe and the new frontiers we seek to explore. Guide our scientists, engineers, and leaders as they push the boundaries of human knowledge and ability. May our exploration of the moon's South Pole be guided by wisdom, collaboration, and a sense of stewardship over the resources we find. Let us always remember that all greatness, power, and glory belong to You, and may our endeavors in space lead us closer to understanding Your magnificent creation. Amen.

3. Meet The Candidates: Who’s on Stage For Wednesday’s Republican Debate

The first Republican Presidential debate is scheduled for August 22nd at the Milwaukee Buck's Fiserv Forum, with eight candidates participating, but notably excluding frontrunner Donald Trump, who chose an interview with Tucker Carlson instead. The candidates' platforms range from fiscal responsibility and national security to education reform and healthcare, reflecting diverse conservative ideologies. The absences of Trump and President Biden in their respective debates signal a shift in modern politics, where the focus may be moving away from policy specifics and more towards beating the other party, sparking discussions about the importance of debates in democracy.

Lord, guide our hearts and minds as we navigate the complexities of political discourse and debate. Help us to be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, as we strive to be peacemakers in our communities. May we look beyond parties and personalities, seeking Your wisdom and righteousness, and may our leaders and citizens alike work towards unity, respect, and compassion for one another. Amen.

Biden Visits Maui: Aid Promised & Locals Protest

In the wake of a tragic wildfire in Maui, President Joe Biden's visit to Hawaii has garnered a myriad of reactions both locally and nationally. Hawaiian local media is notably critical of the response, while national outlets seem less focused on the administration's handling of the disaster.

President Biden has pledged unwavering support to the affected community. In his recent statements, Biden expressed profound understanding of the impact of loss and promised to assist Maui in recovery and rebuilding, emphasizing respect for sacred lands and traditions. “I know how profoundly loss can impact a family and a community and I know nothing can replace the loss of life,” Biden said in a statement Sunday. “I will do everything in my power to help Maui recover and rebuild from this tragedy,” he continued, adding, “We are focused on respecting sacred lands, cultures, and traditions.”

The President's Visit: Local Criticism
However, President Biden's recent visit to Maui did not receive the warm reception from locals that might have been expected. Local media and residents have been vocal in expressing their disappointment, with some holding signs and slogans accusing the President of being "too late." As one local reporter noted, many felt that actions speak louder than words and that the President should have been there much earlier.

The local reaction contrasts sharply with the previous administrations' handling of natural disasters, such as Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Katrina, where the media's critical eye was unrelenting. The response on the ground has been deemed inadequate by local residents, and many have expressed frustration over FEMA's absence and blockages in delivering needed supplies.

Governor Josh Green lauded Biden’s empathy, reminding everyone that he received daily calls from Biden, Harris, or members of his staff. He defended the President, saying it’s not as simple as “getting political” to solve problems and their rage is misplaced.

National Media's Stance: A Disparity in Coverage
While local media in Hawaii have been quick to spotlight the perceived shortcomings of the administration's response, the national media's treatment of the issue has been conspicuously subdued. The criticism of the President's actions has been mostly confined to independent sources, with major outlets like The Washington Post offering limited coverage.

This discrepancy has raised questions about whether the media's lens is being applied more critically to the current administration than it has been to past presidents. While harsh scrutiny was applied to President Bush's response to Katrina and President Trump's response to Hurricane Maria, Biden's handling of the Maui disaster has yet to be met with the same level of examination.

A Call for Accountability
The administration's response, particularly the President's delay in visiting the site, has drawn rightful outrage from local Hawaiians. The lack of a whole-of-government approach and the apparent failure at multiple levels demand scrutiny.

Additionally, the juxtaposition of requesting military assistance for Ukraine while offering limited aid to Hawaii further underscores the need for serious evaluation of the administration's priorities. It begs the question: Where is the energy and action from the government in responding to a domestic crisis that has left hundreds missing and local death toll estimates in the 400s?

Reflection
The situation calls for empathy, compassion, and accountability. The tragedy in Maui reminds us of our responsibility to love and care for our neighbors, whether locally or nationally. The lack of a united response is a moral failure that challenges our core values. The Scriptures teach us about the importance of being present, timely, and acting justly. It emphasizes empathy and compassion for those who are suffering. The current situation in Maui demands more than political posturing or media coverage; it requires heartfelt commitment and decisive action.

My little children, let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth. (1 John 3:18)

The Space Race:
The Moon's South Pole

In what feels like a futuristic daydream, the moon's South Pole has suddenly become a hub of international attention and activity. Despite being a place that hasn't experienced sunlight in billions of years, it's now a sizzling hot spot for space exploration. The reason? A new space race involving nations and private companies focused on landing, resource extraction, and even the potential for colonization. The South Pole of the Moon is no longer the stuff of science fiction; it's now a scientific goal and an entrepreneurial dream.

A New Kind of Space Race
This week, Russia and India made ambitious attempts to land a spacecraft on the moon's South Pole, a feat never accomplished before. Russia's spacecraft tragically crashed into the surface, a blow to the nation that had not launched a moon mission in 47 years. Conversely, India spends a mere $1.5 billion on its space program (compared to NASA's $25 billion), yet is poised to potentially make history on Wednesday. If successful, India's mission would be an immense achievement and perhaps a testimony to the power of frugality and ingenuity.

What sets this current space race apart from the historical Cold War era is the tangible goal of establishing permanent human colonies on the moon, exploiting its natural resources, and using it as a springboard for missions to Mars. But landing on the South Pole isn't a walk in the lunar park; it's dark, riddled with craters, and difficult to find a flat place to land. While Russia's failure is embarrassing, it's hardly shameful given the challenges.

Private Companies and Innovation
What's unique about this space race is the involvement of private companies like SpaceX, stepping up to innovate and filling gaps that government agencies may struggle with. The blending of government and private industry reflects a shifting paradigm in space exploration, embracing collaboration and resourcefulness. Companies like Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin are even working on turning moon dust into solar cells.

The Lure of Lunar Resources
Water on the South Pole is a game-changer. Beyond the potential for supporting human activities such as drinking, it is crucial for making rocket fuel. In-situ resource utilization (using the moon's resources) could radically alter space exploration, reducing costs and opening up new opportunities.

Reflection
This thrilling chapter in space exploration invites a reflection on the grandeur of creation and the potential for human creativity and collaboration. It is a testament to the God-given intellect and innovative spirit that drives humankind to explore and conquer new frontiers. The race to the moon’s south pole challenges us to look beyond our earthly bounds, to value cooperation over competition, and to view the moon not merely as a barren rock but as a canvas for dreams and possibilities.

Yet we must always remember that no matter how high we fly, it is the Lord who rules above us. 1 Chronicles 29:11-12 says, “Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty! For all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all! In your hand is power and might! It is in your hand to make great, and to give strength to all!”

Meet The Candidates:
Who’s on Stage For Wednesday’s Republican Debate

The first Republican Presidential debate will air today, Wednesday, August 23rd. The debate will be held at the Milwaukee Buck's Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and will be broadcast on Fox News. It will be moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum. Eight candidates are set to take the stage, with a notable absence. Former President Donald Trump, who is polling comfortably ahead, has decided to forgo the first Republican primary debate, instead opting for an interview with Tucker Carlson that will air simultaneously.

Leading the field by a significant margin, Trump's choice is seen as a calculated snub, possibly a part of his ongoing feud with Fox. Some believe this is a tactical move to avoid potential attacks on stage, particularly about his ongoing legal battles. While his decision was not entirely surprising, it sparks discussions about the importance of debates in democracy and raised questions about whether candidates should be required to participate. President Biden has also chosen not to participate in debates against his primary opponents, Marianne Williamson and Robert F. Kennedy Jr..

These absences by the two frontrunners may signal a shift in modern politics. It’s not as simple as Trump and Biden avoiding scrutiny. Debates are a space for ideas to be challenged and opponents to build trust with the American people. However, as the electorate becomes more ideologically polarized, the campaign becomes less about people’s ideas and more about which Democrat can beat the Rupublicans and which Rupublican can beat the Democrats. They don’t see the need to convince the American people of their specific ideas, they just need to convince them that they can beat the other guys.

We applaud anyone who wants to present their ideas before the people, have them challenged by opponents, and fight for citizens' trust. With that said, let’s give a brief summary of everyone you are going to hear from on Wednesday. Two things to note: 1.) Reflection
Debate, sharing ideas, and respectfully disagreeing are essential parts of democracy. That ought to be celebrated. That being said, as the campaign continues, the temptation to be harsh or spiteful in our speech will abound. We will be praying a few verses over our hearts, so that we may be pillars of peace in the storms of political strife and cultural division.

We are going to pray that we will be good listeners:

  • James 1:19 - So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;

  • Proverbs 18:13 says, “If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.”

We are going to pray that we will be peacemakers:

  • Matthew 5:9 - Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.

  • Romans 12:18 - If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

We are going to pray that Christ would rule our hearts over personalities and parties:

  • Galatians 1:10 - For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? For if I were still pleasing men, I wouldn’t be a servant of Christ.

  • Matthew 6:33 - But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.
