This story could very well be the plot of a Hollywood thriller, complete with mysterious Chinese companies, genetically engineered mice, and illegal laboratories.

An illegal laboratory was found in California operated by a Chinese biotech firm called Prestige Biotech. The firm stands accused of using genetically engineered mice to study diseases such as HIV, E. coli, malaria, and Covid-19. The lab was discovered in a warehouse in Reedley, California, an unlikely setting for a Bond-esque villain lair, where apparently they've swapped laser sharks for mice.

This discovery has raised numerous concerns, notably the complete disregard for legal requirements and controls typically needed to handle infectious agents. The warehouse, which, as city manager Nicole Zieba put it, was a far cry from the usual complaints about loud music or misplaced garden hoses, contained over 800 chemicals and more than 20 infectious agents. It’s also worth noting that Prestige Biotech wasn’t even licensed to operate in California and had been there under false pretenses.

What we do know is that people with good intentions rarely need to hide what they’re doing. 1 John 1:7 encourages us to walk in the light as Jesus is in the light. As believers, we are called to live transparently before God and one another. The Lord desires for us to walk honestly, continually illuminated by the truth of Christ. Stories like these are intriguing and make us curious. However, let’s not lose sight of the lesson here. What is our relationship with the truth? Have we taken our hidden sins, baggage, and insecurities to the Lord? Have we allowed ourselves to be transformed by the light and truth of the gospel?
